According to PEOPLE.com / Crime & Courts
After Lane Garrison is released from state prison for a vehicular manslaughter conviction, he plans to devote a portion of his time to meeting with young people to warn them on the perils of drinking and driving, his lawyer tells PEOPLE. "He will never forget what happened and he will have to learn to the live with guilt," says defense attorney Harland Braun. "When he gets out, he will talk to teenagers as a volunteer." The former star of TV's Prison Break is currently serving a 40-month sentence at the Golden State Modified Community Correctional Facility in MacFarland, Calif. Garrison was involved in a 2006 car accident that killed a 17-year-old Beverly Hills High School student, Vahagn Setian, and left a 15-year-old girl injured. He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and two other alcohol-related charges. It's Garrison's third stop in the California state prison system and likely his last until his release, expected sometime early next year if Garrison earns a 50 percent reduction in his sentence for good behavior, says Braun, who spoke to Garrison recently. "He's settling in," says Braun, noting Garrison has access to a library and an exercise yard. "He's living in a dorm-kind of arrangement. He's reading and writing and that's important to him. It' s like a downtime from life – and learning how to accept responsibility." Garrison cannot speak at high schools yet but he's already featured in an anti-DUI PSA called "Graduation Day," about a group of teens whose lives change forever after they drink and drive. The 20-minute video was released this month and is being distributed to high schools across the nation by its producers, the Troy and Alana Pack Foundation, says director Andrew Gallery. The foundation is directed by Bob and Carmen Pack, who lost two children in 2003 when a drunk driver hit the youngsters on a sidewalk. Initially, the Packs had mixed feelings about including Garrison. "Carmen and me, we're from the other side," says Pack. "But Lane has lived through this from the opposite side. And the more we thought about it, what better person to have participate than someone who has lived it."
Good evening,
Just a quick update: I have uploaded various photos from different events Lane attended in the past to the Library for your viewing. Just some that we hadn't already had in there, so I wanted to make sure they were in there now. BIRTHDAY PROJECT UPDATE: I have yet to receive any postcards for the Birthday Project, but I am told that some are choosing to send them to Lane himself. I'll be sending a holder for them so Lane can put them in a nice place so they're not scattered. Also, a quick warning, because I have actually received my letter rejected for one of the reasons on the enclosed list-- you may want to be wary of sending anything that is not in the simplest fashion-- you cannot send musical greeting cards or glitter, stickers, glued plastic, metal or laminated items. No hand painted or crayon drawing either. So if you get your card rejected, you'll know why... they have a strict list. Thank you to all who are sending them, and if you wish to send them to me, I would prefer that so he's getting a birthday gift on time and knows where they're coming from. Thank you! angela
I just wanted to share this article that heralds possible good news for Lane. Many thanks to Aimee and her keen eye for spotting it!
Prison Break Coming Early for Garrison? Natalie Finn, eonline Freedom could come sooner than expected for Lane Garrison. The actor, sentenced in October to 40 months behind bars for vehicular manslaughter, could be released as early as January 2009 thanks to good behavior credits, a source close to Garrison exclusively tells E! News. When sentenced, Garrison was credited for 91 days he had already served and, combining that with California's early release program for good behavior, was looking at a possible 20-month stretch. Garrison, who upon sentencing apologized profusely for the Dec. 2, 2006, car crash that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Beverly Hills High School student Vahagn Setian, is said to be in better spirits since being installed at the medium-security Golden State Correctional Facility near Bakersfield, Calif., after at least three transfers. He has also begun to write again, having optioned six scripts before being cast on Prison Break in 2005. "He is an incredible writer, and he is focusing on that now that he can," the source said. "He said he reached the darkest depths he could imagine and could barely move his body, let alone write something," the insider continued, explaining how Garrison was too distraught to even pen letters, let alone scripts, from behind bars. "For the first time now, he has been able to actually see beyond and look into the future." At his new facility, inmates are able to play basketball and check out books from the prison library, making it "by far the most comfortable" place Garrison has been since being locked up in August to undergo pre-sentencing diagnostic treatment at the California Institute for Men in Chino. However, the insider says the former Prison Break star remains very distraught over what he did, adding, "It is depressing, but he is holding on." A police investigation revealed that Garrison's blood-alcohol level was 0.20 percent and he had cocaine in his system when, while driving in Beverly Hills, his SUV jumped a curb and hit a tree, killing Setjian and injuring two 15-year-old passengers. He had met the high-schoolers at a nearby supermarket and had accepted their invitation to accompany them to a party. They had just left the gathering, where Garrison's attorney said he had one drink, when the accident occurred. The actor suffered minor injuries. "I just want to say how sorry I am to the Setian family," Garrison said in court in October before he was sentenced. "I am sickened by my behavior on that night. My thoughts keep coming back to that night. "I want to show that my walk with sobriety will be very easy. I want to help other kids not make the same mistake I did." —Additional reporting by Ken Baker, Jason Kennedy and Claudia Rosenbaum © 2008 E! Entertainment Television, Inc.
